Don’t feel bad about yourself if you ever read a blog post or hear a makeup guru use a few terms you don’t know. I’ve been there and many of them have been there too. So, I’ve compiled a list of my personal favourites that gave me headache when I first heard them.
When you get to learn these words, you’ll not get lost the moment you find them in an article or hear somebody use them. You can always add whole bunch of new words to your vocabulary, but these are my 25.
1. BAKING.
This is when you apply powder on your face, or to set your makeup. I bet you’ve heard a couple of gurus use this, so don’t get confused the next time you see it.
2. BEAT (n) A face with full makeup applied on it
(v) To apply makeup.
3. BLENDING
This is when you mix makeup on our face so that it doesn’t show where it starts or stops.
4. BUFFING
Application of foundation / Application of makeup. It can be used in both situations.
5. CREASE
This is where the skin of your eyebrow and your socket meet.
6. CREASING
This is when makeup collects/ piles up in the lines of your face
7. COLOR CORRECTION
Using one color to conceal another color.
This is usually used when you’ve applied the wrong color or you’ve gone beyond the limit you intended.
8. CUPID’S BOW
The vertical line at the top of your lips, right below your nose.
9. CUT CREASE
Using primer or concealer to mark creases on your face.
10. DOUBLE CLEANSE
Cleansing your face twice, first with an oil based cleanser, and then with a water based cleanser.
The first cleanser breaks down any dirt, grime or makeup off your face, and the second addresses issues with your skin, like moisturizing.
11. DRAPING.
The use of a blush to enhance the angles of your face instead of a dark contour.
12. FALLOUT
This is when particles of a powdered eyeshadow fall into other parts of your face.
13. HIGHLIGHTING
This is when you shine the angles of your face where light usually hits first.
14. KICKBACK
This is the powder that rises when you get the product from the pan.
15. NON-TOURING
This is when you substitute contour with other products, usually with the bronzer.
16. PAN/ HIT PAN
This is when you’ve used enough of the product that you can see the bottom of the pan.
17. ROOT STAMPING
This is when you apply mascara to the roots of your eyelashes.
18. SPOT CONCEALING
This literally means concealing a spot or blemish on your face.
19. SPOOLIE
This is a round tool that’s used to brush eyebrows and lashes.
20. STROBING
The technique that involves illuminating strategic points on your face to give it a healthy look. Essentially, this is another form of non-touring.
21. TAN.
(n) A darker skin tone than the one you already have.
(v) To make your skin a little darker than it actually is, especially using foundation.
22. TIGHT LINING
Applying eyeliner in such a way as to fill the spaces between eyelashes.
23. TONE
Skin tone is the color of the surface of your skin.
24. UNDERTONE
This is the hue beneath your skin, either warm, cool or neutral.
25. WATERLINE.
This is the small space between eyelashes and the eyeball.
